Statement from Joseph Kutz, MD, Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center and co-principal investigator of the hand transplant clinical trial and Jewish Hospital

Our team performed a hand transplant on November 25, 2014 on our most recently enrolled recipient, 67-year-old Jim Ray.  The transplant was a single right arm transplant.  We regret to inform you that the transplanted hand/forearm was failing yesterday and after consulting with the family, the team made a decision to remove the transplanted limb. The team will be reviewing the case.

Mr. Ray is recovering well following the surgery at Jewish Hospital.

Our team of expert physicians, surgeons and researchers will be evaluating the procedure to learn as much as possible that will help future hand transplant recipients. The team is grateful to Mr. Ray for his pioneering spirit, and he and his family are in our thoughts and prayers.
